Liverpool.

On arriving in Liverpool, we did a quick scout round of the location, and we walked down to to chinatown, and we went into a local chinese supermarket, we were feeling quite anxious as we hadn't yet secured anywhere to film, but we managed to talk to the manager of the store, who was more than happy to give us free reign to film unsupervised in the store, it was perfect for our documentary, it was really traditional with spices and racks of sauces and ingredients from all around Asia.

This is us filming inside the supermarket, we all shared creative input with the camera work, resulting in some quite interesting pull focus shots, and even testing what a shot would look like going down a conveyor belt of the till!
We then walked to the main office for tourism in chinatown, and tried to scout out the man we had been contacting for an interview, we were told to go into another local supermarket and speak to a man named Simon Wong, who was extremely enthusiastic about our documentary, he arranged an interview for the next day with us, and had a deep knowledge of the history of china town. As i was doing the sound recording, i was starting to take note of my surroundings, and building up a sound scape that worked with the narrative of the film, for the history part at the beginning i wanted to build sounds from the docks for example seagulls, and boat horns, as we learned that this was one of englands most prominent docks and that after the war many chinese mariners got stranded there, which is why it became britain's oldest chinatown. I also wanted to capture sounds from inside a restaurant, as our interviewee was bound to talk about food culture, and i thought having some sizzling noises from a wok, would work well, as i wanted to create an image in the audiences mind while he was talking, and this way of forming the narrative has proved very effective in other documentaries. I also had a go at camera work on day two, using a 1.4 lens to capture some static shots of passers by smiling, it was a very sunny day and we asked them to stand in front of various backgrounds with splashes of colour and interesting patterns, the result was outstanding, what a little composition with the right lighting, it looked very professional and we felt we had achieved a certain aesthetic, like from the documentary 'pockets' that we had originally been looking for.
